CRT
The Civil Resolution Tribunal (CRT) is Canada's first online tribunal, established in British Columbia to provide an accessible and efficient method for resolving various civil disputes without the need for legal representation or court appearances. Operating since July 13, 2016, the CRT offers a collaborative approach to dispute resolution, encouraging parties to negotiate and, if necessary, facilitating adjudication by independent tribunal members. The CRT handles disputes in several areas, including intimate images protection, motor vehicle accidents, small claims up to $5,000, strata property issues, and matters involving societies and cooperative associations.
Features
- The CRT handles disputes in several areas:
- Intimate Images Protection: Addresses claims related to the sharing of intimate images without consent.
- Motor Vehicle Accidents: Resolves issues concerning entitlement to benefits, fault determination, damages, and minor injury assessments.
- Small Claims: Manages claims up to $5,000, including disputes over goods and services, loans, personal property, contracts, and more.
- Strata Property: Deals with matters involving strata bylaws, councils, governance, maintenance, damage, and nuisance.
- Societies and Cooperatives: Handles disputes related to BC societies and housing and community service cooperative associations. The CRT employs a four-stage dispute resolution process: 1. Apply and Respond: Parties initiate or respond to a claim using the Solution Explorer, an online tool that provides customized legal information and options based on user input. 2. Online Negotiation: Parties engage in negotiation through a secure platform to attempt settlement. 3. Facilitation: If negotiation fails, a CRT case manager facilitates discussions between the parties to help reach a resolution. 4. Adjudication: If all else fails, an independent tribunal member makes a decision regarding the dispute, which can be enforced like a court order. These services are available online 24/7, with support provided via email and phone during business hours.
